CHAPTER 12 - UNWRITTEN POETRY

there’s something about looking at you

and finding unwritten poetry, only I can read

in your eyes

and this same something makes me miss you so greatly

when I’m on a highway, the dark closing in around me

something that would make me risk

everything to have you by my side

if only I were able to hold your hand

It took a few days for them to see each other again. Both shops had busy days with lots of appointments and deadlines to reach, but during lunch time on the fourth day, the bell above the flower shop jingled and Jamie entered, bringing a freezing breeze with him.

Mateo stood behind the counter, selling a small bouquet to a customer. When he saw Jamie, he smiled widely at him. Jamie grinned back and waited politely until Mateo had finished wrapping up the bouquet and the customer had left again.

“Hi,” Jamie said when he approached and Mateo grinned at him.

“Hey,” he replied, waving, and immediately felt stupid for it.

Jamie only smiled wider. “How are you?”

Mateo took out his phone, so his hands wouldn’t do anything stupid again.

Good. It’s finally a little quieter today. The last few days were so full of deliveries.

Jamie nodded. “It’s the same in the studio. Parker made me clean up so much I only smell disinfectant all day,” he grinned and Mateo laughed.

Sounds wonderful.

“Just great.” Jamie chuckled. Then he held up a stash of papers Mateo hadn’t noticed him holding before. It was a script for a play, he realised. “I wanted to ask whether you’d want to help me run through some lines? Parker banned me from the studio because he says it disturbs her customers and I need someone to check whether I get them correct. You just have to read along and interrupt when I get something wrong.”

“Sure,” Mateo smiled, surprising himself by agreeing this fast. Maybe Parker signing him up for the poetry slam had done good after all.

“Awesome!” Jamie beamed and Mateo quickly cleared a chair off flowerpots and pulled it around for Jamie. He sat down, then handed Mateo the script.

“They gave me a scene to prepare. I’m going to audition for Orpheus. Maybe that’s a little bit ambitious, but…go big or go home, right?” He chuckled.

Mateo had flipped the script open already but closed it again now to read the front page.

“Hadestown?” he asked and looked at Jamie. You could practically see his excitement radiate off him.

“Yes! It’s a musical again, but I apparently wasn’t that bad at singing at the Mary Poppins audition. At least that wasn’t why I didn’t get the part. This one a small production, they change it up a bit to advertise the big musical. It’s a great chance, it could open up so many opportunities. So, my audition needs to be absolutely amazing”

Mateo smiled. “It will be.”

Jamie looked at his hands, smiling too. “Thank you,” he said, then he gestured to the script. “There should be a bookmark somewhere that marks the scene.”

Mateo found it easily and flipped to the right page.
